Coolant replacement

It is the typical kind of operation that may be forgotten, but which can have considerable influence on your machine's life. Time after time, coolant looses its conduction and antifreezing properties, and can make appear corrosion and limestone in your engine. Theorically, it must be replaced every two years, but check your service manual for more informations.

Remove all fairings to access radiator and reserve tank filling holes, and drain screw (or hose). Then open radiator cap (of course, engine must be totally cold, or coolant may be gushing).

Then, find where is the draining hole. It's always at the lowest point of the circuit, near the water pump : it may be a screw or, as on picture you will have to disconnect an hose. Be careful, on some bikes there is also a draining screw on the engine. Read carefully your service manual.

Durit à ouvrir pour vidanger

Open and drain. Be careful, under pressure, coolant might go far away.

Then let's deal with reserve tank. Remove its bottom hose and empty it.

Vidange du vase d'expansion

If the circuit has not been drained since a very long time, use water to rinse it. Then reinstall drain screw or hose. Fill the circuit with coolant through filler opening up to neck.

Remplissage du radiateur

Adjust level in reserve tank to upper level line (indicated on tank side).

You just have to bleed air now. Let radiator cap open, start engine, warm it during 2 minute, and then open throttle 2-3 times. You should see a few air going away. Stop the engine and re-fill to required level if necessary. Do this operation 2-3 times until no air escapes from circuit.

Purge du circuit

Replace radiator cap, reinstall fairing. During the first 100 km, check level in reserve tank, you may probably have to adjust it.
